Man Dedicates His Life To Adopting Senior Animals Who Are Overlooked At Shelters

Meet Steve Grieg, an animal lover and a kind owner who lives in Colorado. However, Steve is far from ordinary pet owners because he just can’t stop adopting senior dogs and farm animals. For this reason, he has always had lots of pets and typically has three or four dogs in his house at a time.

Steve started adopting animals in need after one of his dogs passed away. He decided to do something to commemorate his pup, so he went to his local shelter and asked for the “least adoptable” senior dog. He wanted to give this dog a chance at having a good life because he was overlooked and couldn’t find a forever home.

“So [I adopted] a 12-year-old Chihuahua [named Eeyore] with a heart murmur and four bad knees and I brought him home and that was just the beginning of all the animals,” Steve told The Dodo.

Grieg was used to the responsibility and enjoyed taking care of animals, so he continued to take in more and more animals from shelters. And now, he has 10 senior dogs, a pig named Bikini, as well as two ducks, pigeons, cats, and a few chickens. He has no more space for pets at the moment, but he will adopt more senior dogs in the future.

His schedule is filled with walks in the park, trips to the vet, grooming appointments… and lots of love and cuddles. “A normal day for me is getting up at 5 a.m. in the morning and making breakfast for all of them, which, you know, there are 10 [dogs] and most of them have different diets,” he said.

He also has an Instagram account with over 800.000 followers, where he often uploads cute pictures and videos of his pets. People from around the world follow his family and look forward to the updates and pictures. Steve is glad his page can show people how great it can be to adopt senior animals.

“They’re just wiser animals,” Steve said. “You kind of know what you want out of life once you become a certain age. These dogs know who they are and it’s easy to develop a relationship with a person or pet who knows who they are. It’s just fulfilling knowing that these guys are happy and loved and well-taken care of. It makes my days worthwhile.”
