Dog Can’t Believe That He Finally Found A Home After 2,381 Days In The Shelter

Meet Higgins, a senior German shepherd had spent almost his entire life behind kennel bars at the Humane Society of Preble County because nobody wants to adopt him. The shelter wasn’t ready to give up on him and the most important reason was Higgins never gave up on finding a forever home either.

Higgins was taken to the shelter when he was a young puppy and was adopted immediately. However, life in his first home wasn’t good and Higgins came back to the shelter in 2012. “We heard he was nothing more than a dog chained up to a dog house,” Renner said. “About a year later, someone walked in with a stray dog — and it was him.”

Higgins always hoped that there would be a right person came and gave him a home, but again and again, nobody wanted him. After so long in the shelter, everyone assumed there was something wrong with Higgins. “His face always had such a worried look on it that he was a little intimidating when he was in his kennel,” Renner said. “People just walked past him.”

Thankfully, Higgins finally found his forever home after 2,381 days in the shelter. Brendon Reed, a 22-year-old guy fell in love with Higgins after seeing his photo online and hearing his story. At that moment, Reed knew Higgins was the only dog for him. “He was just a beautiful dog,” Reed told The Dodo. “He just seemed so cute … I don’t know how he didn’t get adopted.”

When Reed walked in the shelter and said “I’m here to take Higgins home”, Renner was shocked. After six and a half years, Higgins finally has a dad who loves him and makes him feel safe every day. Now, he can sleep on a soft couch, watch TV, run around his own backyard and roll in the grass.
